Sub-Zero Ice Maker

The Process

Discover

The project began with an opportunity to rethink the dedicated residential ice maker from the ground up. Consumer research identified several recurring frustrations with existing products: excessive operating noise, complicated cleaning procedures, uneven distribution of ice within the storage bin, and ice scoops that made retrieving ice unnecessarily cumbersome.

Rather than treating these issues as isolated engineering challenges, our designers approached them as opportunities to improve the entire interaction with the appliance. Every point of contact became part of the design challenge—from understanding when the machine is operating to cleaning it, retrieving ice, monitoring its status, and integrating it into the home.

The result was a design strategy focused on quietness, simplicity, accessibility, and integration. The appliance needed to provide the substantial ice production expected from a dedicated machine while behaving more like a refined residential appliance.

Design

The project team defined these top priorities:

• Create a premium ice-making experience appropriate for the Sub-Zero brand

• Dramatically reduce the perceived disruption associated with ice-maker operation

• Simplify cleaning and maintenance

• Improve the ergonomics of ice retrieval

• Provide intuitive access to controls and information

• Integrate the appliance seamlessly into luxury kitchen and outdoor environments

• Leverage connectivity to provide greater awareness and control

• Create a cohesive visual and interactive relationship with the current Sub-Zero product family

Deliver

Our industrial designers focused on creating an experience that feels effortless from the moment the user approaches the appliance. The controls were positioned on the top of the door, creating a clean front elevation while keeping the interface readily visible during use. The control experience also echoes the touchscreen language established across the current Sub-Zero product family.

The ice retrieval experience received particular attention. A purpose-designed rounded scoop allows users to gather more cubes with each motion, addressing a surprisingly fundamental interaction that is often overlooked in ice-maker design.

Cleaning was similarly reconsidered. Rather than requiring users to navigate a complicated maintenance process, the new intuitive cleaning system minimizes interaction and uses a subtle light at the floor of the unit to communicate the progress of the cleaning cycle.

Visually, the product was designed to become part of its environment. The panel-ready front, integrated hinges, and coordinated handle options allow the ice maker to share the architectural language of the surrounding cabinetry and adjacent Sub-Zero appliances. This approach is particularly important for a product that may be installed in highly designed kitchens and outdoor entertaining spaces.

Underneath the refined exterior is a highly capable appliance: producing up to 65 pounds of clear ice per day, storing 25 pounds, operating with Sub-Zero's MaxQuiet™ technology, and using connected intelligence to monitor operation and communicate important information to the owner.

The result is a dedicated ice maker that doesn't simply make more ice—it makes the entire experience of owning an ice maker better.

Sub-Zero

Undercounter Ice Maker

The new Sub-Zero Designer Undercounter Clear-Ice Ice Maker reimagines a traditionally utilitarian appliance as an integrated part of the luxury kitchen and entertaining experience. Developed for both indoor and outdoor environments, the 15-inch ice maker produces up to 65 pounds of clear, cube-shaped ice per day while storing 25 pounds for convenient access.

Our industrial designers worked closely with Sub-Zero to create an appliance that would deliver the performance expected from a dedicated ice maker while addressing many of the shortcomings associated with the category. The design combines near-silent operation, intuitive controls located for high visibility, ergonomically located scoop, simplified cleaning, and thoughtful ice retrieval with an architectural form that integrates seamlessly into surrounding cabinetry.

The result is a new expression of the Sub-Zero philosophy: taking a highly specialized appliance and elevating every aspect of the user experience—from the way the ice is produced and retrieved to the way the appliance looks and sounds within the home.

Key Design Enhancements:

  • Door-mounted ice scoop keeps the scoop conveniently accessible and visually integrated into the door through a purpose-designed holster—an industry-first feature introduced with the previous generation and carried forward into the new design.

  • Guided cleaning system provides a dedicated drawer for cleaning solutions and a prescribed, guided-step-by-step cleaning process with built-in reminders and progress feedback, simplifying maintenance and helping ensure the process is more foolproof.

  • Intuitive touchscreen controls positioned on top of the door for easy visibility and access

  • Control interface designed to visually coordinate with other current-generation Sub-Zero touchscreens

  • Designed for reliable operation in both indoor and harsh outdoor environments
