Allsteel Get Set Chair
The Process
Discover
The design process began with field research. Our team conducted on-site interviews with end users, facility managers, and custodial staff across multiple corporate offices. We observed how space was being used and repurposed throughout the day — often multiple times — and noted where existing furniture systems created friction or barriers to flexibility.
Key findings included:
Frequent reconfiguration of rooms for different functions (training, meetings, group work)
Limited storage space for unused chairs
User discomfort due to inflexible seating
A desire for furniture that could support spontaneous collaboration
Design
From this discovery phase, we helped define a vision for the Get Set chair product line — part of a highly mobile, durable, and visually cohesive system that could be adapted quickly and easily.
The project team defined three top priorities:
Mobility and Storage Efficiency: Products must nest and stack to minimize storage footprint and enable rapid room reconfiguration.
User Comfort and Ergonomics: Seating should be supportive and comfortable for a range of body types and postures, especially in settings with extended use.
Aesthetic and Functional Integration: Components must work seamlessly together and project a unified, professional appearance across different space types.
Deliver
With these priorities in mind, the team moved into concept development and prototyping. A key innovation was the flex back mechanism, which introduced dynamic movement into the backrest by bending a high-strength steel rod under pressure. This minimalist yet robust solution eliminated the need for complex assemblies, reducing both weight and cost while improving comfort.
Through iterative prototyping and testing, the Get Set Chair evolved into a flexible, ergonomic, and space-conscious seating solution — ready to support the agile workplace.
