To lay the foundation for this redesign, our team conducted extensive ergonomic research and performed rigorous testing on competitive saddles. The research revealed clear opportunities to reduce pressure for sensitive areas, improve anatomical support, and preserve the natural pedaling motion. These insights guided the initial direction of the new design.

 

Design

Though visually minimal, this product posed a significant ergonomic challenge: deliver effective support and comfort without compromising leg mobility.

The project team defined three top priorities:

  1. Increase comfort through targeted anatomical support

  2. Reduce physical strain by eliminating known pain points

  3. Maintain full range of motion for the legs during use

 

Deliver

The final saddle design features a more convex form to better support the ischial tuberosity bones—or “sit bones”—where the rider’s weight is most concentrated. A central relief groove was strategically incorporated to minimize pressure on sensitive areas, improving comfort during prolonged use. The delta-wing contour of the rear seat tapers smoothly to provide thigh clearance, optimizing both support and range of motion. This refined shape accommodates the dynamic motion of pedaling without compromising stability or comfort.

The development of this stationary-bike seat was part of a broader design initiative between our creative team and Life Fitness to enhance the user experience through improved ergonomics. Poorly designed bike saddles can cause discomfort, numbness in sensitive areas, and improper body support—leading to stress on the lower back, shoulders, and hands.

Key Design Enhancements:

  • Enhanced comfort for a wide range of users.

  • Reduced physical strain and fatigue during workouts.

  • Improved leg freedom and range of motion while pedaling.

Our collaboration with Life Fitness resulted in a redesigned saddle that delivers the ideal balance of comfort and performance. It reduces strain and pressure points, improves user support, and preserves full leg mobility—elevating the exercise experience across all fitness levels.
