The Process

Many homes and apartments lack the space for a dedicated home office, even as more and more companies and people transition to remote work setups. Cruver Design collaborated with the Lillipad team to design and launch this home workstation solution, designed to be equal parts usable, comfortable, flexible, portable, storable, and beautiful—capable of turning even tiny living spaces into fully operational offices and then back again. The biggest challenge was figuring out how to transform the desk from standing height to compact storage in a manner that was not so daunting that users would not think twice about making the conversion twice a day if needed.
Design
We explored about a half dozen solutions for the transformation challenge before settling on the patented X-frame approach. The trick was to get the full range of motion from one mechanism and one step, and the X-frame solution provided the greatest range of motion—height adjustable from 6” (fully collapsed) to 48” (fully extended)—with the least amount of effort.
The solution focused on the relationship between the travel put forth by the dual linear actuators and the mechanical amplification provided by the X-frame. We worked with Lillipad to create additional breadboards, defining and refining the dimensions and travel, until we arrived at just the right combination and the transformation was effortless. We then created Prototype Geometry in the form of CAD files for all the parts and shared with their sourcing team to get manufactured.
Deliver
The X-frame set the scene for the aesthetic theme. From there, our designers applied our superior attention to detail, technical knowledge, and aesthetic sensitivity to integrate the supporting components and elements. For example, we implemented wheels that are in line with the foot tubes. That means, functionally, users can roll the Lillipad with little effort; aesthetically, the wheels turn into a seamless visual extension of the feet tubes. Similarly, we were able to craft housing that could fully conceal the inner workings and be assembled without any exposed fasteners.
To make it more user-friendly, we added integrated outlets, a built-in power supply, and USB ports so that users need only a single plug into the wall for seamless, out-of-sight cable management. An optional monitor arm can simplify setup and breakdown even further. Altogether, these design elements mean a product that is as gorgeous as it is user-friendly, offering more living space when not in use, the perfect height when needed, and unbeatable style from any angle.
Lillipad
When they first came to us, the Lillipad team had only a genius idea and a breadboard built in their garage. Our team worked closely with them to bring their idea to fruition, rethinking and refining their approach along the way to maximize the ergonomics and user experience. The result is the Lillipad, the world’s only foldable electric standing desk and the most versatile workstation on the market. It enables users to pop up a world-class office wherever they want, without forfeiting valuable living space or critical ergonomics. In only 30-45 seconds, the Lillipad can go from the box to ready to work, with an operational load of 75 lbs. (static load tested up to 350 lbs.).
For us, the Lillipad exemplifies a successful team collaboration between client and consultant: a design solution so simple and logical that it appears deceptively obvious and belies the amount of blood, sweat, and talent that went into its creation.
By folding down to just 6”, the Lillipad can be stored almost anywhere when not in use, including under beds and sofas, in closets, etc.
