Sub-Zero Wine Preservation

The Process

Discover

This project began with a deep respect for the established legacy of Sub-Zero wine preservation. For years, Sub-Zero had led the industry with solutions grounded in intensive research with sommeliers, collectors, and wine experts. That research revealed several critical needs for optimal wine storage: protection from light through dark, UV-resistant environments; vibration-free cooling systems to avoid disturbing wine; and smooth-glide racks that provide safe, stable access without agitating the bottle.

Building on this heritage, our designers were challenged to evolve the wine storage experience—not just preserve wine, but celebrate the act of collecting and displaying it. Our team introduced three major innovations that transformed the emotional and functional quality of the product: the industry-first inventory tile system, which allows for intuitive organization by varietal or region; an optional storage drawer to accommodate oversized bottles, and a rich, espresso-toned interior, which sets a new benchmark for aesthetic refinement in wine storage design. These enhancements layered a new level of personalization and visual sophistication onto a platform already respected for its performance.

Design

The project team defined these top priorities:

  • Develop a wine storage system that preserves fine wine with best-in-class precision

  • Innovate beyond existing models to deliver both practical and emotional value

  • Introduce organizational features (inventory tiles) to support serious collectors

  • Generate a solution for oversized bottles that aren’t currently accommodated.

  • Create a refined, sensory-rich interior environment with espresso-toned surfaces

  • Ensure seamless integration with Sub-Zero’s existing finished aesthetic standards

Deliver

Our industrial designers developed a consistent platform architecture with shared engineering across the line, enabling variability through cosmetic and organizational enhancements.

The inventory tile system slots behind each wood shelf, allowing pre-labeled or writable tiles (e.g. Merlot, Zinfandel) to be exchanged or updated—supporting evolving collections and simplifying bottle location.

The espresso interior provides a contrast-rich, elegant backdrop that accentuates glass bottles and labels—reinforcing the design as both functional and atmospheric. In concert with soft LED lighting (which offers customizable accent settings), the interior feels like a curated wine cabinet.

While technical features (dual evaporators, precise thermostat, UV protection, sliding racks) ensure preservation, the visual and organizational refinements reflect the thoughtfulness our designers brought to the project—elevating the product from appliance to object of desire.

Sub-Zero

Wine Storage and Preservation System

The Sub-Zero Wine Preservation and Storage system represents the pinnacle of climate-controlled wine preservation, balancing precision engineering and elegant design. Our industrial designers partnered closely with Sub-Zero’s engineering team to elevate the collection beyond standard wine coolers. Two standout innovations—an industry‑first inventory tile system and a luxurious espresso-colored interior—set this lineup apart as both functional and sensory experiences.

The inventory tile system, embedded just behind each wood‑front rack, allows collectors to categorize and locate bottles by varietal at a glance—delivering both visual organization and effortless usability. Meanwhile, the deep espresso interior finish creates a warm, refined backdrop that showcases bottles beautifully while lending a sophisticated sensory presence every time the door opens.

Key Design Enhancements:

  • Industry-first inventory tile system integrated behind wood-front shelving to organize bottles by varietal or occasion.

  • Premium espresso-toned interior finish elevating visual presentation and ambiance while supporting the need to be protected from the light.

  • Independent dual-temperature zones with microprocessor control to within one degree of set point.

  • Full-extension racks for standard and half‑bottle storage without disturbing adjacent bottles.

  • Available bulk storage bin to accommodate magnum sized bottles—the front of which is styled to perpetuate the rhythmic pattern of wood slats adorning the front of each rack.

  • UV-resistant tinted glass to protect wine from light degradation

Our design-led enhancements once again distinguished Sub-Zero’s Wine Storage line in an increasingly crowded market. The inventory tiles and optional bulk storage bin elevated usability and personalization, while the espresso interior established a unique aesthetic that visually underscores the product’s premium positioning.

These innovations reinforced the emotional experience of wine ownership, turning the appliance into a display-worthy focal point in luxury kitchens and dedicated wine rooms. At the same time, technical performance remained uncompromised, ensuring wine remains at ideal temperature and humidity—preserving every subtle nuance.
